The YWCA of Schenectady provides:

Children's Centers (4 Locations)

There are four locations available:

  • 44 Washington Ave - 374-3394
  • E-36 Yates Village - 372-5794
  • 118 Henry Street - 372-3288
  • Schenectady County Community College - 381-1375
Early Childhood Education is available at the YW's Children's Centers for children 6 weeks to 12 years old.

Infant care
Available for children 6 weeks to 18 months old at three sites: 44 Washington Avenue (7:00 am - 5:30 pm), Schenectady County Community College (7:30 am - 5:30 pm) and 118 Henry Street (7:00 am - 5:30 pm).

Childcare
Choose one of four sites for early childhood education for children 18 months old to 5 years old. Available sites: 118 Henry Street (7:00 am - 5:30 pm), E-36 Yates Village (7:30 am - 5:30 pm), 44 Washington Avenue (7:00 am - 5:30 pm) and Schenectady County Community College (7:30 am - 5:30 pm).

Universal Pre-Kindergarten
Program is sponsored by the Schenectady City School District and is free to qualified applicants who reside in the City of Schenectady. For children 4-5 years old preparing for life in Kindergarten with an educationally based curriculum prescribed by the School District. Program is available Monday through Friday from 9:00 - 11:30 am at all YW locations and 12:30 - 3:00 pm at 118 Henry Street and E-36 Yates Village. Program runs the same schedule as the Schenectady City School District. Wrap-around care is available for an additional charge.

Advantage After-School
A recreational, social and educational after-school program available for children 6-12 years old from 3:00 - 6:30 pm during the school year. Homework assistance available and light snack & dinner are served. Program is in conjunction with Boys & Girls Club of Schenectady and held at 118 Henry Street & E-36 Yates Village.

Vacation Fun Days
For children 6-12 years old during school breaks. Activities include: art experience, gym games, creative play and quiet time. Located at 3 sites: 118 Henry Street (7:00 am - 5:30 pm), E-36 Yates Village (7:30 am - 5:30 pm) and 44 Washington Avenue (7:00 am - 5:30 pm).

   INNOVATIVE PROGRAMS
The Innovative Programs Department strives to assist members in achieving healthy life styles through physical activity and wellness programs for women, men and children. We currently offer a variety of fitness and physical activity programs as well as health related grant programs for breast, cervical cancer and colorectal education and screening, cardiovascular wellness, a parenting support group and workforce development program.

Domestic Violence Shelter
The Ywca of Schenectady's Domestic Violence Shelter offers services 24-hour each day/ 365 days a year.

Comprehensive Women's and Children's services available at:

  • Rotterdam Police Station/ Town Court

  • Glenville/Scotia Police Dept./ Town Court
  • Yates Village Resource Center
Support Groups
Groups are available for women (16 years and older) who are abused or have been abused. (There is no fee for the groups) Sessions are held at the YWCA of Schenectady.

Domestic Violence
Open to the public, with discussions around, Empowerment Topics & Information about Options & Rights; Women only.
  • Thursdays 6:30 - 8:00pm


  • Empowerment Group
    Open to the public, topics include but are not limited to: Loneliness, Healthy Relationships, Assertiveness, Coping with Visitation, Self-Esteem Building and Goal Setting. Sign up for this 8 week session. Class meets for one hour each week. Date to be determined. For information and registration call 374-3394, ext 144.

    Counseling
    Confidential and supportive counseling: women (16 years and older) who are abused and their children (5 years and up). Flexible hours available. Call 374-3394, ext 144.

    Housing Services

    The YWCA of Schenectady makes available safe, affordable housing for women for short stays or permanent residence.  Residents enjoy a friendly, supportive environment.  Shared bathrooms, kitchens, TV lounges and laundry facilities are provided.  Support services are available.

    • Forty-two single occupancy rooms for women 18 and over.
    • Transitional housing for 13 women who are employed or going to school.
    • 24 hour staff available to residents.
    • Free use of health center, pool, aerobics classes and cable TV.
    • Convenient location to Schenectady County Community College, Union College and public transportation.
    • Counseling on staff.
